Stuff we did yesterday
Mood:  spacey
Topic: family

Yesterday was the Fourth of July and we actually did some stuff yesterday. It's too hot here this time of year to do all the parade-picnic-outdoor concert-type fun stuff that people can do in normal places where it ISN'T 110 degrees (F, of course, not C) on July 4. So usually we don't do anything, except last year Nathan and I took Aaron to see the second Garfield movie. Woo hoo. (Jesse was at camp so he didn't come with.)

We started out with 7:00 a.m. flag raising at the church. Aaron's in Scouts, so he participated in the color guard. He was so cute. (Jesse was asleep so he didn't come with.) It was followed by breakfast in the church gym, consisting mainly of doughnuts and other pastries, which, if I ate them I'd be hungry again an hour later, so I passed on those and waited till we got home and ate a real breakfast. We skipped the speeches and program and went home early because:

At 9:00, Aaron was in a karate competition. He did the kata competition, performing a series of moves. (Jesse was STILL asleep, so he didn't come with.) He placed 3rd in his division (11-12 Intermediate) and was so proud of himself. Of course, there were only three entrants in his division, but still. I was very proud of him, too, and he was so cute. I think they made an effort to make sure everyone got a medal - in divisions where there were more than three contestants, there were a lot of ties for 2nd and 3rd place.

Then I went and took care of Rusty and Sunshine, the cats I'm looking after for a month, then I took a nap, then I wrote for a while, then I went and turned off the cooler at Rusty and Sunshine's house (when it's 110 outside, an uncooled house will get dangerously hot inside, but the cooler isn't on a thermostat and the owners don't want it left on all the time). (Reminder to myself-make sure to blog story of the first day I went over there and the key didn't work.) Then we grilled spareribs for dinner, then we drove downtown to watch the fireworks from "A" Mountain. (Jesse was playing World of Warcraft so he didn't come with.) I'd always wanted to do this but was afraid of the crowds, but it wasn't bad. We parked in a vacant lot near the freeway, which was opened up for fireworks viewing, and watched the fireworks. I got to play with the "fireworks" setting on my new camera. If any of the pictures turned out I'll post them.
